This is my first attempt at a book review, I have a feeling that as far as book reviews go this won’t be very good, but because I have a narcissistic need to show off that I do in fact read books, I am writing it anyways. Please be warned my last attempt at a book review was during my junior year of high school where I shamelessly plagiarized the the character summaries from the cliff notes ( it may have been spark notes, I can’t remember) of Moby Dick to prove the thesis that characters of Moby Dick were what made the story.
Super Freakonomics is the squeal to the Best selling Freakonomics by the economist Steven Levitt and that other guy who I can only assume is responsible for creating lighthearted narrative that made the first Freakonomicsthe easy to consume best seller that it was and is.
The Duo return to action in this version with a clear goal of being much more controversial. While the first outing of Freakonomics addresses issues including why drug dealers often live with there mothers , “which is more dangerous a gun of a swimming pool” and ” what schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common” and provides ” surprising answers to these question. The second book takes on the likes of Global warming, prostitution and the spared of AIDS. Another major difference from the first book is that this version states from the beginning that its goals are to ” begin a dialog” which is certainly an interesting take from a couple of guys who claim to use the rigorous analysis of “data” ( they really like that word ) to find truth. “Truth” rarely requires a dialog… just saying.
So how is the book? well the narrative is still very enjoyable and lighthearted and I think any one over 12 or 13 years old will find this an easy read. The Analysis is interesting and as you would expect from a book called freakanomics the conclusions reached by the authors are certainly surprising or at least they will be to most people . The downside to this version of freakanomics lies in the authors far more liberal use of data and sources. In the first book Levitt relies heavily on statistics and well accepted studies to support his ideas and reach logical conclusions. In this version the authors rely much more on individuals and single sources to make arguments as apposed to reaching logical conclusions which is a bit of a shame as this sort of hurts the original premise that a ruthlessly analytical approach to the world can be used to find truth.
I would certainly recommend this book for it’s entertainment value its well written and filled with great humor. Unfortunately unlike the original this book seems to use the sort of shock value tactics that fill the pages and channels of much of modern media which is sad because the book would have sold fine on the back of the original and it does some of the content a disservice as some of the arguments come off as political nonsense. when in fact many of them are sound.
I won’t ever recommend that any one buy anything but I enjoyed this book and its a shame that it didn’t re-inforce the use of ruthless analysis and and anti politisisum that the world so very deeply needs
So for at least the last 10-12 years I have noticed that around this time of year “screeners” for various movies start to become available on various torrent or newsgroup websites. I assume this is in anticipation for the oscars.
A screener for the uninitiated is a DVD release made for members of the Academy so they are able to judge movies for the oscars. Why they can’t be bothered to see them in theaters like every one else I will never know.
This year I have decided to compile of short list of the ones that I see. Follow the links and download files at your own risk. I can however verify that all the links provided are to genuine DVD or blue ray screeners for movies which are currently only available in theaters. These are not telesyncs , CAMS or anything else.
I chose to only provide links to publicly accessible torrent sites to make things easier for every one. If you do choose to download something please use at least a browser based adblocker and take the appropriate security measures.
Enjoy !
The new FCC chairman talks about the new 2 sided 600 mhz auction. This is interesting because its the first spectrum auction that will compel existing holders of broadcast licences to sell / rent there spectrum in 6 mhz slices. note using current technologies 6 mhz is about 19 mbits of bandwidth.
The Chairmen also covers the FCCs offcial opinion on net neutrality in wireless networks which is interesting.

Now this is quite the machine. memory mapped video display ! omg you can display bitmaps
This is the same old story. Comapany leaves backdoor for whatever reason , some one reverses there binarys. Epic Fail
This is extremely impressive, they are using ultrasonic speakers to levitate small but real physical objects. It’s unclear how much energy is required but I am sure its not a small amount.
if any one has more detailed info about how it works let me know
So on occasion I go for long walks, I am not sure why exactly other than to procrastinate but I do. recently I have decided that these walks ought to happen at night for one reason or another but mostly because I have already seen everything during the day and I dont really like people very much.
Anyways on my more recent walks I noticed a few things .
Used cars have gotten just absurdly cheap. I don’t know what the argument for buying a new car is these days, but whatever it’s not good ! If your truly too lazy to get an oil change every 5000 miles and maybe do a tiny bit of maintenance, maybe you ought to just walk or see a medical professional. These are some of the examples I saw on my
walk
Now these may not be the most amazing cars in the world but they will get some one to and from work who requires a car. One should also note that these cars are on used car lots, which means that better deals can probably found from private sales. I honestly wonder how much the car dealer can possibly be buying these for to make a reasonable profit. ( I figure they make most of the money on financing these days)
My walk was through the city of San Leandro. San Leandro is to the east of Oakland its a very small city but its an interesting one particularly if your looking for a nice and affordable place to live in the bay area. I Don’t live in San Leandro but I wish I did.
This is why:
So a few years ago a buddy of mine and I bought a 1974 240z to just drive around like idiots.
The Car only cost 1200 dollars. and the Idea was to drive the thing around in the desert and just have a good time.
We live in the East SF Bayarea and the car was located in Santa Cruz. We sorta decided to buy the car on a whim and ended up in santa Cruz at night ( Never buy a car at night !). We took a cursory look and things looked good. The car only cost 1200 dollars so we were not expecting much more than being able to drive the car. I took it for a test drive and man it pulled like a monster in 3rd gear.
The Drive Home.
This is when things started to go down hill. First I noticed the car had no mirrors not a huge deal, but I certainly would have noticed this if we had not bought the car at night.
If you have ever driven down to santa cruz its a great drive however driving a 1200 dollar car down the 17 at night with no mirrors is to say the least an experience. Then I noticed I was getting a bit dizzy thanks to exhaust leaking into the car.
We did eventually make it home but as we entered the driveway the engine showed signs of over heating.
Anyways the car ended up needing alot of work I think I will post about that another time.
So my buddy and I built a ” land sailor”. We got the idea after making a trip to home depot to just wonder around. My friend noticed a roll of tyvek and said ” it would work well for making sails”.
We ended up not making the sails from tyvek instead we purchased a used sunfish on craigslist
And so the land sailor born

It broke during the first ride after my buddy drove it into a hole
